Beginner's Course – FAQs
Below are some frequently asked questions which will help when booking in to the beginner's course.
We offer courses in both winter and summer and the sessions are held indoors. Each course consists of six consecutive weekly sessions, each lasting two hours. For information on the dates of our next available course, please visit the Beginners' Courses webpage.
The course are held on a Monday evening at Fort Purbrook, usually starting at 6pm until 8pm. Further information will be sent out when you sign up for the course.
Wear close-fitting clothing to prevent the bowstring from catching on you—avoid baggy sleeves or bulky jackets, as they can hinder shooting, and wear several thin layers, as the room can be cold. We provide protective bracers for your arms and sometimes tabs for your fingers. Please remember not to wear open-toed shoes or sandals. Long hair must be tied back to avoid entanglement with the bowstring while shooting. Remove any upper body piercings, including earrings, before shooting.
Toilets are available at Fort Purbrook, but there are no refreshment facilities on site, so please bring a drink and snack if you wish to.
Yes, we are certified to teach you through our affiliation with Archery GB, the governing body for archery in the UK. If you wish to continue with the sport after completing the course, you will need to join a club such as Havant and Hayling Bowmen and Archery GB to maintain your insurance coverage.
We typically do not accept children under 10 years old, as they often lack the necessary strength and physical size to effectively shoot a bow and fully enjoy archery. We will assess young children and advise parents if we believe it is in the child's best interest to wait until they are older to take the course.
While archery is a physical sport that requires some mobility and strength, you don’t need to be exceptionally fit. It can also be suitable for individuals with disabilities, including those who are blind or partially sighted. If you have any doubts, please contact us to discuss your specific situation. Additionally, inform us of any medical conditions that may affect your participation in the course or that we should be aware of.
No, all equipment is provided by the club. Please do not purchase any equipment before the course.
